Thousand Islands Secondary School athletes Trent Corney and
Jacob Smith made their final high school meet of season count the most at the
all-Ontario track and field championships in Toronto.
Corney turned in a masterful performance in his three OFSAA events - junior
boys triple jump, javelin and discus - to claim two gold and one silver.
The TISS athlete started his medal haul with a gold medal on Friday in the
triple jump, earning first place with an effort of 13.54 metres, one centimetre
better than the second-place finisher.
His second and third events also proved his growing competitiveness in the
field with a multi-medal performance on Saturday. In the morning, Corney smashed
an OFSAA record, set just last year, in the javelin event with a toss of 69.28
metres, eclipsing the old mark by almost 11 metres. In the afternoon, Corney
picked up a silver medal in the discus, with a mark of 53.99 metres.
"The first throw he launched at 66 (metres), the whole competition all you
heard was a huge gasp," said TISS track and field coach Randy Givogue. "Everboby
knew they were in for something big."
While Corney was dominant in the javelin, Smith turned his predominant event
into OFSAA gold by winning the 2,000-metre open steeplechase with a time of five
minutes and 49 seconds, almost three seconds clear of the second-place
competitor.
Smith followed that performance on Friday with a silver medal performance on
Saturday in the senior boys 3,000 metres, an event that coach Givogue knew was
going to be one of the closest contested races at the meet. Smith was second
with a time of 8:34.07, almost 35 seconds better than his third-place finish at
EOSSAA, and was only one and a half seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.
Smith cut almost 10 seconds off his personal best time and less than four
seconds separated second from eighth place.
"That's remarkale to PB by that much at such a high level at the most most
important race," said Givogue. "This was the biggest accomplishment of his whole
career here. He went out totally on top."
The performances of Corney and Smith and other TISS athletes helped the
school claim third overall in the boys' team results.
Jonathon Finlayson of South Grenville won a gold medal in the 100-metre
ambulatory dash with a time of 13.03. Giants teammate Matt Hunt paced fifth with
a time of 14.19. In the 1,500 metre wheelchair event, Smiths Falls athlete Tony
Leduc won a bronze medal with a time of 13:52.52.
Peter Karalis of TISS ended up tied for third in the junior boys pole vault
with a mark of 3.45 metres and the deadlock could not be broken, so he received
a bronze medal. In the senior boys pole vault event, Brian Farnsworth posted a
height of 3.85 metres and finished seventh. Dustin Herder was 10th with a mark
of 3.7 metres.

"That's a really nice reward for Shelby," Givogue said about the hard-working
Kent.
